Varoufakis: We will not present new proposals to the Eurogroup on Thursday

Greek finance minister rules out new reform program to be presented at next Eurogroup meeting

Varoufakis: We will not present new proposals to the Eurogroup on Thursday

The Greek Minister of Finance Yanis Varoufakis told the German newspaper Bild that it will not present a new list of reforms at the next Eurogroup meeting to be held on Thursday. Varoufakis explained that the Eurogroup "is not the place where positions or proposals can be presented that have not previously been discussed and negotiated at a lower level".

Varoufakis he also specified that Greece is ready "at any time to find a solution with its partners, provided that their representatives come to the negotiating table with a clear and strong mandate". And according to Varoufakis, it is precisely the lack of a strong mandate that is the cause of the failure of Sunday's negotiations in Brussels.

Almost on the same wavelength as the Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras who stated that the "main factor blocking the negotiations" on the resumption of loans to Greece is constituted by the "differences between the EU Commission and the International Monetary Fund on debt restructuring". Tsipras also added that "it is crucial to reach a viable agreement with creditors, not one that will bring Greece back to its current situation in six months".

Meanwhile from another German newspaper, the Süddeutsche Zeitung, comes the news of a possible plan B in the absence of an agreement at the Eurogroup on Thursday. In fact, according to the German newspaper, the heads of state and government could meet on Friday evening for an extraordinary meeting in Brussels in the last attempt to avoid the worst in the Greece case. A plan would already be ready, which would take place over the weekend, which would foresee the closure of Greek banks starting next week with the aim of avoiding capital flight.
