Vaccines and Delta variant: "A single dose does not make you immune"

The Delta or Indian variant worries the whole world, also considering that to protect themselves from contagion a single dose of the anti-Covid vaccine is not enough. This was clarified by the coordinator of the Scientific Technical Committee and president of the Superior Health Council Franco Locatelli to the microphones of SkyTg24: "A single dose of vaccine does not adequately cover" the Delta variant, said the scientist, reiterating the need to "complete the vaccination course“. The variant, he added, “raises concern because it is more contagious and can cause significant pathologies in unvaccinated subjects or in those who have only one dose of the vaccine.

In Italy, to date, according to the indications provided by the Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza “there are more than two and a half million elderly people who have not yet been vaccinated and it is to them that absolute priority must be given in the vaccination campaign because the virus is more lethal, as this year and a half has taught us, precisely for fragile subjects ”. In general, in our country 28,6% of the population, almost 17 million people, have completed the vaccination cycle, while more than 31 million (52,94%) citizens who received the first dose.

Before autumn arrives, it is therefore necessary to further accelerate the vaccination campaign, also taking into consideration that according to the experts of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) by the end of August the delta variant will represent "90% of the viruses circulating in the EU”.
For those who have already received or will soon receive the second dose of the vaccine, the reassurances of the EMA arrive: “The vaccines are also working against the Delta variant, but we must be sure that the second dose is also taken ”, confirmed the executive director of the EMA, Emer Cooke, at the 'Sky TG24 Live In Florence' event. The Delta variant "will be increasingly important", in terms of diffusion in Europe, Cooke noted, reiterating confidence in vaccines as a means of protection.

In this context, from Monday 28 June all of Italy will officially be in the white zone. After weeks of waiting, even the last remaining region, the Aosta Valley, will pass into the range subject to fewer restrictions.
