"Tonight, with a new Iraqi government in place, and after consultations with allies abroad and Congress at home, I can announce that America will lead a broad coalition to drive back this terrorist threat." The president of the United States, Barack Obama said this yesterday evening, announcing a campaign against Isis, also extended to Syria.
“At the moment, the greatest threats come from the Middle East and North Africa – continued the number one of the White House -, where radical groups exploit discontent for their own gain. One such group is ISIS, which calls itself the Islamic State. But let me clarify two things. Isis is not Islamic, because no religion condones the killing of the innocent. And it certainly isn't a state. They are former al Qaeda affiliates in Iraq, who have exploited the sectarian strife and civil war in Syria to seize territory on both sides of the borders. They are a terrorist organization, which unleashed poses a growing threat beyond the region, including the United States."
The first objective is to extend the air raid campaign already underway in Iraq to include Syria to allow local forces to go on the offensive: “I have made it clear that we will hunt down the terrorists who threaten us everywhere. This means that I will not hesitate to take action against Isis in Syria, as in Iraq. This is a fundamental tenet of my presidency: If you threaten America, you will find no safe haven."
The second point is "to increase our support to the forces fighting these terrorists on the ground", therefore the Pentagon will send another 475 men to Iraq, to help the Baghdad and Kurdish forces, also forming a National Guard which will give in particular to the Sunnis the possibility of fighting against the terrorists who are taking over their lands, thus pushing the local tribes to renounce their alliance with ISIS.
