While the collapse of the European markets continues, the two sides of the Atlantic decide to run for cover together. On 28 November - three weeks after the forthcoming G20 in Cannes - an anti-crisis summit between the United States and the EU will be held in Washington. This was announced by the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, which will be received by Barack Obama together with the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, and to the High Representative of Brussels for Foreign Policy, Catherine Ashton.

On the table there will naturally be “global economic events – reads Van Rompuy's communiqué -, bilateral relations and opportunities to promote economic growth and employment”. The White House specifies that mutual efforts to "strengthen economic ties and growth" will also be analysed.

On the political front, also on the agenda is "joint work" that the US and EU can carry out to "support democracy and prosperity" in the Middle East and North Africa, but also "continuous coordination" with respect to Iran and "the commitment to better international law enforcement and anti-terrorism cooperation”.
