USA, nuclear submarine in South Korea

A US nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Michigan, has arrived in the southern port of Busan, South Korea, but will not participate in the joint naval exercises in Washington and Seoul. The news was released by the Asian country.

A South Korean Navy official said the USS Michigan is making a routine stop to rest its crew and refuel. But the purpose and sense of the American move are obviously of a different nature.

It is no coincidence that the submarine arrived on the same day that North Korea celebrates the anniversary of the founding of its army. On significant dates like this, it often happens that Pyongyang demonstrates its military capabilities and the choice of the United States clearly has the aim of putting pressure on the North Korean regime.

Before the nuclear submarine, the United States had already sent the nuclear aircraft carrier Carl Vinson to South Korean waters. The US Navy fleet has just begun joint maneuvers with the Japanese navy and soon the South Korean navy will also join them, in an exercise that becomes a show of force a short distance from Kim Jong-un.
