French President Nicolas Sarkozy, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister David Cameron have urged the regime in Damascus "to put an immediate end to any form of violence, to free political prisoners and to allow the United Nations to carry out a mission without hindrance monitoring the situation". This was announced in a statement from the Elysée which condemned the bloody repression carried out by the Syrian troops against the opponents.
Even Barack Obama has asked Syrian President Bashar el Assad to "step aside". The White House has also taken some measures resolute against the Damascus government such as freezing all its properties in the United States and banning all American companies from investing in Syria and importing oil from the country in revolt.
