Initial jobless claims fell by 22 to 26.000 in the week ending Sept. 359.000, the US Department of Labor reported. The data is better than forecasts by analysts, who expected 375.000 new requests. The previous week's figure was revised up slightly from 382.000 to 385.000 units.

The four-week average, more reliable as it is not subject to market fluctuations, decreased by 4.500 units to 374.000 units.

The total number of workers receiving unemployment benefits for more than one week for the week ending September 15, the latest for which data is available, decreased by 4.000 to 3.271.000. The unemployment rate for uninsured workers remained stable at 2,6%.
