Usa, consumption unchanged in May, incomes weak: +0,3%

Purchasing power of the American consumer remains in the balance – Inflation is growing faster than payrolls

Usa, consumption unchanged in May, incomes weak: +0,3%

May go slowly, says the proverb. But for the US retail sector, sales are going nowhere. Data released today by the Commerce Department confirms sluggish domestic demand in May. Labor income grew by 0,3% compared to April, while consumption remained unchanged. An unsurprising result, considering that with inflation rising by 0,5% (+3,6 on May 2010), the erosion of real wages does not seem to stop. The figure was in line with the expectations of analysts, who expected a 0,4% increase in payroll.
