A cryptographic work by Beeple, sold for $69.346.250 to the founder of Metapurse

The final auction price of over $69 million was not the only record broken in connection with the sale. The artwork was minted exclusively for Christie's, the first major auction house to offer a purely digital work with a unique NFT and to accept cryptocurrency, in this case, Ethereum (Ether). Approximately 22 million viewers tuned into Christies.com for the final moments of the offerings.

A cryptographic work by Beeple, sold for $69.346.250 to the founder of Metapurse

Metakovan, the pseudonymous founder and financier of Metapurse, the biggest NFT fund (unique digital assets) to the world, made a highly successful fine art offering and acquisition, breaking the record for the most expensive NFT ever sold. Metakovan acquired the artwork during a single lot auction hosted by the 255-year-old Christie's auction house, which opened bidding on February 25 and closed on March 11 at 10am.

Guillaume Cerutti, CEO of Christie's, said: “We are delighted to have brought together two distinct collecting communities – traditional and digital – at exactly the right time for digital artists, blockchain technology and cryptocurrency. The possibilities for what comes next in this field are exciting and we look forward to more collaborative innovations in the near future ".

The artwork depicts a digital collage of 5.000 unique artworks created by digital artist Mike Winkelman, now famous as Beeple, which displays the accumulation of his work by creating and publishing a work of art every day consecutively for over 13 XNUMX/XNUMX years. Metakovan further explains the historical significance of this acquisition: “When thinking of high-value NFTs, this one is going to be pretty hard to beat. And here's why: It represents 13 years of day-to-day work. The techniques are replicable and the skill is surmountable, but the one thing you can't hack digitally is time. This is the jewel in the crown, the most precious work of art for this generation. It's worth $1 billion. "

This piece now ranks third among the most valuable works of art ever sold by a living artist, after works by Jeff Koons and David Hockney.

Twobadour, Steward of Metapurse, said this event marks a shift in how the world perceives wealth, achievements and craftsmanship. “A renowned auction house, a contemporary artist; an all-digital masterpiece that lives on a shared financial platform on the internet, acquired by a black person. This is certainly history. We also hope that it is the future ".
