Banking union in Europe? Germany says no

"We do not see how these reflections can help overcome the crisis in the short term“. On "a long-term perspective", however, the question can be examined. So a spokesman for the German Ministry of Finance commented today the proposal for a banking union with centralized supervision and a European guarantee on the deposits of savers in the Eurozone.

The idea was approved a few days ago by the European Commission and reiterated yesterday by the number one of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, during a hearing in the European Parliament.

The showdown on the issue will probably come after the Ecofin meeting and the European Council scheduled for 28 and 29 June in Brussels.
