Unioncamere: new businesses at their lowest for 10 years, but young people are trying

In the third quarter, in Italy, the balance between business openings and closures was positive by 12.934 units: the lowest figure in the last ten years. According to calculations by Unioncamere, in the period in question there were 76.942 registrations of new companies (1.923 more than in the same quarter of 2012) and 64.008 terminations of existing companies (up by 3.498 units compared to last year).

It is the craftsmanship that suffers the most. Between July and September, the balance between openings and closures of craft businesses was negative by 1.845 units, also in this case the worst figure in the last ten years. The decline is almost entirely linked to the closure of sole proprietorships (-1.587 units, equal to 86% of the negative balance).

Unioncamere also provides some data relating to initiatives by young people: of the almost 300 companies born between the beginning of the year and the end of September, over 100 (33,9%) are led by one or more people under the age of 35. 38,5% of new youth businesses were born in the South (almost 40 businesses opened in nine months).

The sectors in which young people seem to identify the greatest chances of success are those of commerce (where 20,5% of new youth businesses operate), construction (9,4%) and restaurant services (5,6% ).

In the vast majority of cases (76,8%) these are sole proprietorships, the simplest – but also the most fragile – form of operating on the market. 15,6% instead chose the form of the capital company, more suitable for supporting ambitious development projects.
