Unicredit, board of directors at high voltage: Mustier at the showdown

Extraordinary board today for Unicredit: on the table whether or not to re-candidate Jean-Pierre Mustier's bank as CEO and whether or not he is compatible with the merger with MPS

Unicredit, board of directors at high voltage: Mustier at the showdown

Hot hours in the Unicredit skyscraper in Piazza Gae Aulenti in Milan, where, according to reports from Il Sole 24 Ore, an extraordinary board meeting is being held on the very delicate issue of governance. The fact that the meeting is held on a Sunday is already an eloquent sign of the importance of what is at stake. It's about decide whether or not to re-nominate Jean-Pierre Mustier as CEO and whether or not his eventual reconfirmation is compatible with the issue of bank acquisitions and mergers and in particular with that of Monte dei Paschi.

It is no mystery that, playing side-by-side with the future new president of Unicredit Pier Carlo Padoan, former Minister of Economy in the Renzi and Gentiloni governments, and above all with the international funds that are shareholders of the bank, Minister Gualtieri would like to marry MPS with Unicredit and in this regard prepares a dowry for the wedding which could reach, between one item and another, around 8 billion euros.

But Mustier put his foot down and didn't want to know about Monte dei Paschi. Instead, the CEO aims to reunite in a subholding all the foreign activities of Unicredit and perhaps to list them on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in view of a possible future international merger.

Today's tug of war could have sensational results, which do not exclude the surprise exit of Mustier from Unicredit with very significant effects on the share when the Stock Exchange reopens tomorrow

That time when you have a truly intelligent person, you want to bend him to your filth, but I don't think you will ever succeed
