"A piggy bank for a friend": financial education comes to school

“Will you buy it for me?” the wishes of the children are almost infinite, unlike the financial resources of the parents who have to deal with daily expenses, extraordinary expenses and unexpected events. How to prepare them then, in the near future, to be economically aware and sustainable citizens? Through culture and through what they love most, which is to play! Born with these prerogatives "A piggy bank for a friend", the educational initiative dedicated by Banca Generali to primary schools from all over Italy within the economic citizenship program "Economiascuola KIDS", created by the FEduF, chaired by Stefano Lucchini, which provides for an online meeting with the children, connected from school via LIM or from home.

The meeting, which lasts about 90 minutes, stimulates in children an initial reflection on the value of money and on the need to manage it responsibly for themselves and for the community, with a view to conscious citizenship. Alongside the theme of the value of savings, children are helped to think about the theme of sustainability, starting from the daily and personal actions that each of us can perform, thus promoting the "good practices" of sustainable development that create added value and preserve resources for future generations. Teachers can register classes (at this link).

“We are happy to work alongside FEduF to promote a healthy culture of savings among the new generations that can guide our kids in the first steps to take to become aware citizens. Private savings is one of the cornerstones of our country which unfortunately, however, is still too far behind in the international rankings of financial education. It is necessary to make tomorrow's citizens aware of the value of savings in order to relaunch Italy's level of competitiveness on a global scale. This is why today we believe that the task of our private bankers is to promote a correct culture of savings through their daily work alongside Italian families, accompanying them in their asset protection choices” comments Marco Bernardi, Deputy General Manager of Banca Generali.

And the game? Before or after the meeting, the children can make piggy banks using recycled materials (e.g. plastic bottles, boxes, decorations from clothes that are no longer usable, etc…). Once made, the piggy banks must be photographed and sent to scuola@feduf.it, together with a slogan or a thought on the theme of sustainability, savings and the protection of natural resources. All submitted works will be published on the site and the most original ones will receive a small prize from Banca Generali.

All schools involved in the project "A piggy bank for a friend" each student will receive a copy of "Give me a piggy bank and I will save you the world", a practical booklet designed by Banca Generali to introduce children to the concepts of savings and sustainability, through the use of drawings and metaphors. The teachers of the classes taking part in the course will also receive a copy of the book "Fiabe e Denaro", useful for strengthening students' economic citizenship skills.
