An Italian will build the largest offshore wind farm in the United States

An Italian-led company will build the largest offshore wind farm in the United States. We are talking about Us Wind Inc, a Boston-based company active in the green energy sector. The president is Alfonso Toto and the parent company is Renexia, an Italian company operating in the field of renewable energy.

US Wind Inc. was awarded $8,7 million in the tender for the development, design, construction and operation of a 25-year wind farm on the West Coast of the United States. The project calls for a total investment of 2,5 billion dollars and is part of the Obama administration's strategic plan for the development of renewable energies.

"The outcome of the tender is an important result - commented Sally Jewell, Secretary of the Interior of the US government - and reflects the industry's orientation and confidence in this technology, and reinforces our nation's choice towards this new frontier of 'power".

The plant will be of considerable size: the two marine areas that will host the towers are 32.370 hectares large and are located off the coast of the state of Maryland, but in federal waters. The project envisages the installation of wind turbines, with single-pile or tripod-type foundations, the number of which will vary from 85 to 125, depending on the turbines chosen, while the transmission of electricity will be ensured through an offshore transformation platform which, with submarine cables which will connect with the PJM Power Grid (part of the Maryland State Power Grid).

“Being awarded this tender - said President Toto - is the demonstration that Italy, even in the international arena, can compete and win in terms of technology and innovation with competitors from all over the world. Our commitment now is to design and build a low-impact, efficient and highly technological plant with short construction times".

The installed capacity will be over 500 MW and the plant will have an annual production capacity of 1.824 GWh. The wind farm will bring energy to around 300 homes and will be 15 miles away from the coast, so as to minimize the visual impact.
