The sad anniversary of the great earthquake/tsunami that struck Japan last year will soon be celebrated. And to sadden spirits even more came a report from the Center for the Study of Earthquakes at the University of Tokyo which raises (by a lot) the probability of a magnitude 7 earthquake that would hit the capital within four years. The forecasts are based on the number - on average 1,5 per day - of smaller tremors - from 3 to 7 - that have been registered in Tokyo since the great earthquake rocked the northeast last March. The frequency is about 5 times higher than normal.

The probability of a force 7 earthquake in Tokyo, which was previously estimated at 70% within 30 years, has now become 70% within 4 years.

The last time a strong earthquake hit Tokyo was in 1923 (the 7.9 Great Kanto earthquake, with more than 100 dead). Previously, in 1855, the Ansei Edo earthquake also devastated the city.)
