Jimmy Katz was born in New York in 1957 and after graduating from Bowdoin College in 1980 he worked as a mountaineer, extreme skier and photographer for specialized magazines. His interest in jazz was born at Carnegie Hall, where, when he was sixteen, he first heard Thelonious Monk and Art Blakey. Since then jazz has indelibly accompanied his life, even in the most extreme moments, such as a freezing night in Peru spent listening to Coltrane in the hope of not being swept down a mountain (at an altitude of 6000 metres) together with his shipping. In 1991 he left mountaineering and embarked on a career as a photographer. He returns to New York, where he begins to photograph jazz musicians, working for major record labels. He creates the images for at least three hundred album covers, while his photographs appear in numerous specialist jazz publications, including JazzTimes. Twice, in 2006 and 2011, he was awarded the "Award for Excellence in Photography" by the Jazz Journalist Association. As a jazz lover (he has a collection of over 4.000 vinyl), he has a deep respect for musicians and the music they create. This is very evident in his work as a photographer, which fully reflects his passion for this art form. Recently he has also started working as a sound engineer and video maker, especially for live recordings in New York jazz clubs, in particular at the Smalls Jazz Club. In this new role he has worked on more than thirty CDs. Among the artists he has worked with are: Mark Turner, Jason Palmer, Miguel Zenon, Miles Okazaki, Avishai Cohen, Ari Hoenig, Lage Lund, Frank Kimbrough, Greg Hutcherson & Johnathan Blake.
