Umbria, elections: the center-right triumphs

The centre-right goes beyond expectations and conquers Umbria for the first time in 50 years. In the regional elections, which saw a very high turnout (64,42%) compared to usual, the centre-right candidate Donatella Tesei, cassation lawyer and senator of the Lega, also supported by Fratelli d'Italia and Forza Italia, gathered 57,5% of the votes against Vincenzo Bianconi, the candidate of the Five Star-Pd-Leu alliance, which stopped at 37,5%. 2,7% went to Claudio Ricci with a local civic list.

In Umbria the center-right thus wins with more than 20 advantage on the centre-left and the votes collected by the League and by the Brothers of Italy, ie from the right-right, are close to 50%.

For Luigi Di Maio, Nicola Zingaretti and Giuseppe Conte, immortalized in the famous group photo of Narni, it is a burning defeat that does not question the Government but raises very strong doubts - especially among the Five Stars - on the opportunity to replicate the Pd-M5S alliance in other regions and to strengthen it nationally.

"The defeat in the Umbria Region of the alliance around Vincenzo Bianconi - admits the secretary of the Democratic Party, Nicola Zingaretti – is clear and confirms a negative trend of the center-left consolidated in recent years in many large Umbrian municipalities, which has not been able to overturn. We will reflect a lot on this vote and on the choices to be made, a vote certainly not helped by the chaos of controversies that accompanied the Government's economic manoeuvre".

Zingaretti tried to get away with telling his followers that voting is Renzi's legacy but forgetting the scandal of patronage appointments in healthcare Umbrian who overwhelmed the former governor Catiuscia Marini, who was certainly not Renziana, forced to resign.

“We have always considered the civic pact for Umbria a laboratory, but the experiment didn't work” in turn declared the summit of the Five Stars.

The premier seems to think otherwise Giuseppe Conte, according to which a defeat cannot stop the Pd-Cinque Stelle alliances. But now Conte must fear a flashback from the Five Stars and above all from Di Maio for the League and the Government will not benefit from him.

Instead, cheer Matteo Salvini (“The League doubled the votes of the Democratic Party”), as well as Giorgia Meloni and both are asking for the resignation of the Conte 2 government even though the Umbrian one is only a local vote in a region that has the inhabitants of Lecce or, if you prefer, of a district of Rome, but it was the first electoral test of the Five Star alliance- Pd.

But certainly the Umbrian vote, due to the sensational dimensions of the result, makes the government nervous and weakens and strengthens the centre-right. And soon we will be voting in the key region of Emilia Romagna.
