Ultimatum Merkel and Hollande to Tsipras: "Eurogroup only if there is prior agreement"

Either in the next few days Greece will reach a definitive agreement with the EU, the ECB and the IMF on debt in advance or skip the extraordinary meeting of the Eurogroup tomorrow at 12 which must precede the evening summit of the heads of government: this is the ultimatum launched today by the chancellor German Angela Merkel and from the French president François Hollande to the head of the Greek government Alexis Tsipras who had submitted to them a new economic plan.

France and Germany are fed up with the push and pull of Greece and the provocations of Greek Finance Minister Varoufakis and are demanding not simple commitments but a definitive agreement. Otherwise new meetings are useless and Greece will risk facing default if it does not receive new financing and will not be able to pay the installments to the IMF by 30 June.

According to the latest rumors, the Greek government is ready to tighten VAT by adopting permanent tax measures equal to 2% of GDP (but the former Troika had asked for 2,5%) and to stop early retirement from 2016 as well as adopting a solidarity for people who earn more than 30 euros a year and for companies that have annual profits of more than 500 euros.

Athens would be open to further tax increases if creditors agree to cut the debt. Italian premier Matteo Renzi said he has a "positive sentiment" towards tomorrow's meeting which will try to resolve the dramatic Greek case but the next few hours will be decisive.
