Ultimatum from Europe to Rome. Sarkozy's laughter on Italy's reliability

It was supposed to be the summit to save the Euro and save Europe, but nothing concrete has yet come out of the Brussels European Council. On the other hand, Italy suffers the ultimatum of the EU: immediately implement the measures for growth.

The request was practically unanimous: it came from the German Chancellor Angela Merkel (on the part of the Italian authorities "all necessary measures must be taken" and the debt must be reduced "credibly"), from the President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy (we asked Berlusconi for reassurance why Italy would implement the measures it promised") and from the president of the European Commission Josè Manuel Barroso ("all the member countries are committed to consolidation and this spirit has been confirmed by all, even by the first Italian minister). Above all, it was the laugh that French President Nicolas Sarkozy had when asked if Italy was a reliable partner, and it did not go unnoticed that our country was in fact put on the same level as the Greek one. “We met Papandreu and Berlusconi and reminded them of the responsibilities that all countries have in this period of crisis,” French President Nicolas Sarkozy said during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the end of the council meeting European.

It was supposed to be the decisive summit and instead everything is still to be resolved, and the unknowns about Greece are now added to those about Italy. "By Wednesday" our country will have to present a credible plan, and it is precisely for that date that the European Council will meet again, but work will resume on Tuesday with the meeting of the Eurogroup. “More work is needed,” Van Rompuy chanted late in the evening at the end of a hectic day. "The final decisions will be taken in the next council." In Brussels it is therefore 'work in progress', and Barroso spoke of "work in progress" before leaving the Council headquarters, shortly after 22 pm. On the good side, "there is the agreement for 8 billion in financial assistance" to Greece, which should be implemented through "a mix of public and private". Also on the table are the recapitalization of the banks, the increase in the resources of the stability fund and the housekeeper. “I hope that the definitive decisions can arrive within 72 hours”, Barroso hoped before leaving. Not exactly appropriate words to say close to the reopening of the stock exchanges, but which well summarize the situation of total uncertainty.
