Prince Philip has died at the age of 99, Duke of Edinburgh and husband of Queen Elizabeth. Philip had recently been discharged from hospital after a hospitalization - first at King Edward VII's Hospital in London and then transferred to St. Bartholomew's Hospital on Monday - due to an infection "not related to Covid", Buckingham Palace had specified. Heart problems had been added to the infection.

The announcement of Philip's death came directly from the queen via the official royal family account. In the note the sovereign expresses "deep sadness" for the loss "of her beloved husband" who "passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle".

Landmark of the British court for decades, the Duke of Edinburgh had celebrated in November i 73 years of marriage with the almost 95-year-old Elizabeth II. Four children were born from their marriage: Carlo, Anna, Andrea, Edoardo. 

Prince Philip would have turned 100 in June. Son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Alice of Battenberg, Philip was born on the island of Corfu on June 10, 1921. At 18 months, he fled to Paris following the coup d'état and the abdication of his uncle, King Constantine I Before his marriage he renounced his Greek titles, was received into the Church of England and adopted the surname Mountbatten. In May 2017 he retired to private life.
