UK: Labor holds, but collapse in Scotland

The Labor Party holds in the cities of England, but sinks in Scotland (where it slips to third place after the nationalists of the SNP and the Conservatives) and loses decisively ground in Wales. Pending the results of London, which according to all forecasts will have an Islamic mayor for the first time, Sadiq Khan, the most important electoral test before the 2020 policies certainly does not give signs in favor of Jeremy Corbyn's party.

According to partial figures, Labor lost 9% of the vote in Scotland and almost 8% in Wales. What burns the most is the Scottish defeat, because Labor has dominated the local political scene for decades and they also find themselves overtaken by the Conservatives after Corbyn had indicated among his priorities the confirmation of second place in Holyrood, the seat of Parliament in Edinburgh. A partial consolation for Labor is the result of England, where the losses were lower than those expected on the eve.

Meanwhile, Nicola Sturgeon, leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), who won a third consecutive mandate, rejoices: “What we see is that the SNP is taking the place of Labour. The collapse of Labor support is impressive”.

Satisfaction also for Nigel Farage, leader of the anti-European party Ukip, who is expected to enter the Welsh assembly for the first time. Nonetheless, in Wales, Labor Carwyn Jones should remain prime minister, even though he may not have an absolute majority and therefore have to seek alliances. Agreements with conservatives or Ukip are excluded, while the door is open to dialogue with Plaid (independence center-left formation) and with the liberal democrats.
