SACE Research Office, Focus on Pakistan

The SACE Economic Studies Office has published the first "Focus on" of the new year to analyze the changes that are taking place in Pakistan in view of the political elections.

The work focuses in the first part on the events relating to the Reko Dig mine, in particular the sentence of 7 January 2013 with which the Pakistani Supreme Court declared null and void an agreement signed in 1993 between the regional government of Balochistan and the multinational mining company Bhp Billiton for the exploitation of the mine.
According to SACE, "the story demonstrates how the Pakistani operating context is difficult, particularly in some areas of the country, and how geo-political influence is a crucial factor for respecting the rights acquired by foreign investors".

The focus also deals with the political context which is currently expected to be highly risky in view of the political elections and above all after the arrest order issued by the Supreme Court on 15 January against Prime Minister Ashraf for corruption.

The complete focus is available at this address.
