Changing of the guard in the Italian diplomatic representation at the EU. Today's summit, in which Prime Minister Enrico Letta makes his debut, will probably be the last European summit that will see the official participation of Ambassador Ferdinando Nelli Feroci in his capacity as Italy's permanent representative to the European Union.

Nelli Feroci, the man who negotiated the Fiscal compact on behalf of the Italian government, is leaving due to age limits. He will be replaced shortly and the appointment is up to the Council of Ministers on the proposal of Foreign Minister Emma Bonino.

Initially it seemed that the appointment could concern the Italian ambassador to the UN, Cesare Ragaglini but his quotations now seem to be declining. According to the latest rumors, to replace Nelli Feroci is now in pole position Ambassador Stefano Sannino, former secretary of Minister Renato Ruggiero for Foreign Trade and currently Director General of the European Commission for enlargement after having previously been diplomatic adviser to the Presidency of the Council with Romano Prodi from 2006 to 2008.
