EU, Tusk: "Close the Libya-Italy route"

The migratory route from Libya to Italy can and must be closed. To say it is the president of the European Council Donald Tusk: “The flow of migrants from Libya to Europe is not sustainable. Europe has shown that it is able to close illegal migration routes, as it has done in the Eastern Mediterranean. We discussed this example: now it's time to close the route from Libya to Italy".

In 2016 alone, the Strait of Sicily was crossed by 181 migrants and landings in Italy recorded an increase of 18% compared to 2015. 90% of the boats left from Libya on a route which since the beginning of the decade has seen people die in sea 13 thousand people.

The topic of the route is particularly hot, given that the political declaration is expected in Malta tomorrow in which European leaders will finally try to help Italy in the migrant crisis that has hit it since 2014. “I talked about it at length with the Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni,” said Tusk, “and the plan is within our reach. What we need is the full determination to do it."
