EU, emergency meeting on Iraq and Ukraine

European Union Foreign Ministers meeting in Brussels: the main topic will be the crisis in Iraq, but Ukraine will also be discussed - Putin's reassurances do not convince everyone - Foreign Ministers Mogherini of Defense Pinotti have given the go-ahead to a mission in support of the populations in Northern Iraq.

Today in Brussels will be held a emergency meeting of EU foreign ministers. This was announced by the office of the head of EU diplomacy, Catherine Ashton, specifying that the difficult international geopolitical situation will be at the center of the conversation: the main topic will be the crisis in Iraq, but we will also talk about Ukraine, in view of the arrival at the country's border of the humanitarian convoy organized by Russia, despite Western countries having warned Moscow against any intervention on Ukrainian soil. 

On the other hand, they arrived yesterday reassuring statements by the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, even if the Kremlin's reliability is questioned by many, this being the most difficult phase in diplomatic relations between Russia and the West since the end of the cold war.

The meeting will begin at 12 and will be the first meeting of European ministers since the EU decided on economic sanctions against Russia. 

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Federica was in Italy yesterday Mogherini, and the number one of the Defense, Roberta Pinotti, gave the green light for a mission in support of the populations of northern Iraq: an air bridge will be set up, with 6 flights, starting from 16 August, for the distribution through Unicef ​​of 36 tons of water, 14 tons of protein biscuits, 200 tents and 400 sleeping bags.

“Our concern, which we believe is shared by all political forces, is to help civilians and protect the Christian and Yazidi communities – the ministers said in a joint statement -. The hope is that the decision for strong, shared and joint action by the whole EU will come out of the Brussels council. We remain available to report back to Parliament at any time."
