EU, Renzi: "The budget law cannot be changed"

The Italian prime minister, Matteo Renzi, is not willing to change the budget law just approved by the government even if there will be comments from the European Union.

Renzi said this when speaking on a radio broadcast Rtl 102,5 in telephone connection from Brussels, where he is for the European Council.

“The budget law will not change: if the EU has to make observations we will listen to them, but this maneuver has the lowest deficit in the last 10 years. We are making efforts and we want to give a signal to the citizens not to the technocracies of Brussels,” Renzi said.

Economy Minister Pier Carlo Padoan was more conciliatory. He has denied press reports according to which the European Commission has expressed skepticism about the Italian budget law being examined in Brussels.

“The dialogue continues, the Commission has not expressed skepticism,” Padoan said in response to a question about the Commission's attitude towards the budget law.

“We are following a procedure that will be developed in the next few days on the evaluation of the specific measures”.
