The European Commission "closely monitors the volatility of the markets and, if necessary, is ready to act and make proposals on how to strengthen the European recovery, so that it is not compromised by this volatility". This was assured by Valdis Dombrovskis, vice president of the EU executive and responsible for the euro and growth, during the press conference at the end of Ecofin.
However, both Dombrovskis and the president of the Eurogroup, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, have clarified that the medium-term objectives of restructuring the public finances of the EU countries will not be changed, and that it would not even be a sensible initiative in reaction to market tensions.
