EU, Olli Rehn: "Monti is already going beyond Berlusconi's letter of intent"

Olli Rehn reassures Italy. The EU commissioner for economic and monetary affairs spoke confidently about the future of Italy, after the appointment of the new Monti government: “Overall, the current situation in Italy represents an opportunity for positive change. I am confident that, with the right policies, Italy will be able to overcome the current loss of confidence on the part of the markets”.

“Italy – continued Rehn – needs budgetary consolidation and courageous choices for growth, and the EU commission is already working with the new premier Mario Monti”.

However, the commissioner noted that the Commission "will continue closely monitoring Italy in the coming weeks and months", with a first report to the Eurogroup “next Tuesday”. Rehn added that "some of the measures (provided for by Berlusconi's 'letter of intent' of October 26, ed.) have been taken, and the new prime minister has already indicated his intention to go further in some important areas".
