EU, today or tomorrow in Italy to verify the measures

Brussels – It will start between today and tomorrow the European Union monitoring mission on Italy. This was announced yesterday evening by the European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, Olli Rehn, at the end of the Eurogroup meeting. "Tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest, we will send our technicians to Rome to supervise Italy," he said. The indications for our country are clear: “Is essential – Rehn reiterated once again – that Italy implements the measures contained in the letter presented by Berlusconi and proceeds with the structural reforms with which to relaunch growth and employment".

In this sense, the European Union and the Eurogroup have already received guarantees from the Minister of Economy: “Tremonti reassured us about the determination of the Italian government to proceed with the rapid adoption of the measures contained in the letter". As for the role of Europe, "we have not asked Italy for governments of national unity" as in the Greek case "because Italy is not part of any programme", stressed the president of the Eurogroup, Jean Claude Junker .

However, "we welcomed the decision of the European Commission to intensify monitoring of Italy, with quarterly checks, in cooperation with the European Central Bank". Words that remove all doubts: Italy, like Greece, is now under the strict control of the troika (EU, ECB and IMF).

Is the commitment of the European Central Bank perhaps dictated by Mario Draghi's desire to help Italy also in light of the political situation of the last few hours? “Draghi did not comment on the Italian situation, because he stopped being Italian on November XNUMXst,” Junker replied.
