EU, Moscovici: "Unacceptable attacks on Italy"

After the controversy of the last few days, relating to Germany's fears about a possible Lega-5 Stelle government, the European commissioner intervened: "Italy is improving".

EU, Moscovici: "Unacceptable attacks on Italy"

"It is inadmissible to speculate and interfere on the Italian situation, here there is no plan that contradicts Italy's democratic process". The Commissioner for Economic Affairs, the French Pierre Moscovici, who brought the international debate back to Italy after the controversy sparked by his colleague Günther Oettinger, Commissioner for the Budget, added: "I recall some economic facts to respond to unfounded rumors : Italy emerges from a long period of crisis, unemployment is reduced, the debt trajectory is going down albeit slowly, these are real improvements that reflect the efforts made by Italian citizens, let's focus on this instead of speculating, speculating about what is happening in Italy”.

Moscovici's intervention comes not only after the controversy triggered by Oettinger ("The markets will teach Italians how to vote", he said in an interview, but then apologised) and the constant attacks by the German press, but also after an interview with 'adnkronos agency, the director of the Brussels think tank Daniel Gros had said that Germany is preparing a 'plan B' in the event that an M5S-Lega government implements the programs announced with the aim of protecting the most exposed Eurozone countries from the contagion effect of distrust.

The French commissioner, on the other hand, reiterated that the Commission “is ready to work with the Italian interlocutor when it comes into operation. It is important at this stage to focus on the positive effects of Italy's efforts instead of speculating on what will happen, Italy is of capital importance for everyone, for Europe, for investors, for the G7 of which it belongs . The country's challenges are known to all: they are the public debt, low productivity, competitiveness, the need to give hope to young people, solidarity with the South, there are frustrations and angers that need to be understood, which is why it is inadmissible to speculate (on catastrophic scenarios – ed), and there is no doubt that Italy is a fundamental added value for Europe”.
