EU to Italy: maneuver in April or procedure

It may not be an ultimatum, but a penultimatum for sure. Tomorrow the European Commission will give Italy until the end of April to implement the 4 billion euro maneuver (0,2% of GDP) already requested in recent months. And if this deadline is not respected, the College of Commissioners is ready to open the infringement procedure for excessive deficit in the first meeting in May. European sources report it to Ansa.

In the internal debate of the Commission, account was taken of the "political assessments" on whether or not to insist that Italy immediately follow up on the promises made by Minister Padoan on 2 February in response to the request for a correction of 0,2% of GDP sent by Moscovici and Dombrovskis on 17 January.

In fact, assessments of the opposite sign to that desired by Italy would have emerged in the college of Commissioners, on the fact that giving additional time, when the violation is considered "overt", could be counterproductive in other countries.
