Ukraine: Yanukovych is wanted for manslaughter

Former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych is wanted. An arrest warrant has been issued against him and a massacre investigation has been launched. Interim Interior Minister Arsen Avakov announced it on Facebook.

After the turbulent fall of Yanukovych, Ukraine has entered a transitional phase and has already given itself a new provisional head of state: Iulia Timoshenko's right-hand man, Oleksandr Turcinov, who had also already been entrusted with the presidency of Parliament and the role of interim prime minister.

Turcinov, therefore, at the moment alone holds all the three major offices of the state, but this is a temporary situation: Turcinov himself in fact today invited the deputies to form a new government of national unity by next Tuesday, and the presidential elections have been brought forward to May 25. On the other hand, it is the Ukrainian Constitution itself which provides that, in the absence of a president, the powers of the head of state are entrusted to the president of Parliament.

In the meantime, all traces of Yanukovych have disappeared. It seems that he attempted to escape to Russia with a private plane, however he apparently did not have all the documents in order for takeoff. Armed men would then have tried to bribe the border guards, but failing to do so, they would have made the former president get into a blue car to flee again. But now there is no more news.

In Kiev, the situation is relatively calm. The groups of demonstrators armed with clubs and sticks continue to roam the center and control the road to the airport to prevent their enemies from escaping. In a TV message, Turcinov asked Moscow to “respect Ukraine's European choice. We are ready for dialogue with Russia for the development of our relations on an equal footing,” he added, stressing that European integration is “a priority for Kiev”.
