Tyrrhenian Link: Sardinia, Terna and local administrations compared

The construction of the Terna-branded submarine power line is getting to the heart of it. The work will allow the further development of renewable sources and will contribute significantly to the decarbonisation of the island

Tyrrhenian Link: Sardinia, Terna and local administrations compared

The consultation phase between Terna and the local administrations on the Tyrrhenian Link is underway, the submarine power line that will connect Campania to Sicily and this to Sardinia. The first technical table was convened by the Sardinia Region on May 7th. The company led by Stefano Donnarumma will invest around 3,7 billion euros, involving around 250 companies, including local ones, in the construction of the work.

The new link is a cutting-edge project that involves the construction of two submarine power lines, one from Campania to Sicily and one from Sicily to Sardinia, for a total of 950 km of 1000 MW connection in direct current.

With this first step, the process of sharing the project with the local area gets underway. A fundamental phase, preparatory to the launch of the authorization application for the Ministry of Ecological Transition, during which Terna will submit the cable route hypotheses and the planned location for the electricity stations to the local institutions and will analyze their observations and evaluate any proposals for design optimization.

At the technical table of Friday May 7 all parties interested in the work will participate: Region, Terna, the Ministry of Culture, the Metropolitan City of Cagliari, the municipalities of Selargius, Settimo San Pietro, Quartucciu, Sinnai, Maracalagonis, Quartu Sant'Elena, the State Property Agency State, Arpa Sardegna, Legambiente, Lipu, WWF, Italia Nostra, Confagricoltura and Coldiretti.

The project will then be shared in the public consultation phase with all interested citizens. In particular, the President of Sardinia Christian Solinas appreciated that the Tyrrhenian link project is in line with the request made to Terna to protect and not alter the landscape, designing new entirely underground power lines where possible and appropriate.

Il Tyrrhenian Link is a strategic work for Sardinia and for the entire Italian electricity system. Its completion represents a decisive step for the decommissioning of the most polluting plants on the island, contributing to its decarbonisation and ecological transition.

Furthermore, the new work will contribute to greater integration between the various market areas and more effective use of the constantly increasing flows of energy from renewable sources, thus ensuring an improvement in the reliability of the grid and the entire electricity system.
