Twitter closes in Italy: 17 people lose their jobs

Twitter closed its Italian office in Milan and 17 people lost their jobs, including country manager Salvatore D'Ippolito. Now the branches in Germany and the Netherlands are also at risk. These are the first consequences of the cut of 300 employees announced ten days ago in the context of corporate restructuring due to the now long-standing crisis of the social network. In the last year, since co-founder Jack Dorsey returned to lead the company, Twitter stock has lost 40% on the stock market.

But in reality, the Italian office was not doing badly, having closed the 2015 financial statements with a turnover of 3,9 million euros (up by as much as 256% on the previous year, the first of the financial year, when it was 1,1 million) and a net profit of 179 thousand euros. Meanwhile, a procedure has been opened between the unions and the Lombardy Region to find an employment solution for the employees.

On the web, however, the #WeAreTwitter campaign launched by researcher Nathan Schneider continues. The idea is to create the world's largest digital cooperative managed by its users.
