Tourism: zero holidays in 2020 for one Italian out of 2

Among the many devastating effects of Covid-19 there is also the collapse of . Partly because money has decreased and the propensity to save has increased, partly because with the pandemic we don't move with the serenity of before, in 2020 almost one out of two Italians will not go on holiday. Compared to last year, in our country the number of people leaving will drop by almost half (-40%), at 24 million, against 21 million destined to stay at home. Among the vacationers, 86% will remain in Italy, while only 4,8% will go abroad. The data is contained in an Isnart-Unioncamere survey on the economic effects of Covid-19.

According to the survey, whoever moves between July and September will do so in more than three out of four cases to go to the beach (76,5%).

As regards the holiday bonus, the analysis shows that so far only 7,4% of holidaymakers have used it, while 78,3%, or almost 19 million Italians, will not use it and 14,3% is still undecided.

Locally, the most popular region is the Sicilia, which will welcome a total of almost 3 million tourists, even registering an increase in presences compared to last year's 2,7 million.

To complete the podium there are Puglia e Campania, which however recorded a negative balance compared to 2019: -10% and -22% respectively. In fourth position the Sardinia, where tourists are expected to drop by 14%.

The most serious collapse, as was foreseeable, will be that of Lombardia, where even 800 fewer tourists are expected than in 2019. But it won't get much better even in Lazio (-780 thousand), in the Marche (-660 thousand) and in Emilia Romagna (-640 thousand).

Among those who will not leave, 30% of those interviewed indicate the main reason economic difficulty, while another third of the sample speaks of fear of exposure to contagion. The research shows that 31% of tourists claim to have been influenced by the health situation linked to Covid with regards to the choice of their holiday.

The choice of the type of accommodation facility and the means used to reach the holiday destination follow the same line: over 10 million Italians - more than 40% of those who will leave - opt for holidays in an apartment, while to reach their destination 62% of those interviewed will use the car, detaching by many points the percentages of those who will travel by train or plane, which both amount to 10%.
