Food and wine tourism: is Monferrato the new Tuscany?

Visit Italy also to taste its renowned wines: many do it, but which are the most popular destinations? If it is indisputable that historically Tuscany is the favorite destination for wine or food and wine tourism, it is also true that in recent years something has been changing and in the consideration of foreign visitors the appeal of Piedmont, in particular of Monferrato, has grown a lot. Someone even came to define the hills of the province of Asti as the new Tuscany, and even the authoritative New York Times already wrote about it three years ago, in 2016, when described Monferrato as one of the 52 “absolutely” places to visit in Italy.

To confirm the trend there are then, and it could not be otherwise, the data: in 2019 tourism in Piedmont exceeded the 15 million of presences (+1,35%), reaching over 5 million and 200.000 arrivals (+1,86%). The leading tourist products, according to the careful evaluations of theRegional Tourist Observatory, there are more and more outdoor activities and, above all, food and wine: in fact, only in this sector have arrivals grown by over 2009% since 36, and attendances by 30,2%. The Monferrato hills are therefore increasingly catching up with the more popular Tuscany, Puglia and Sicily, but what is the reason for this success? The swarm of wine bars and wine bars, with hundreds of events throughout the year allowing the public to visit cellars and discover many different qualities of wine, for all tastes and budgets.

The protagonist of this fashion is among others theMonferrato Regional Enoteca, an association that organizes one event a day in the area: "Every day, at aperitif time - commented the manager Roberto Tassinario - from the beginning of October to mid-December, we have the pleasure of hosting and presenting an event, with the The goal is to offer the broadest, most varied and pleasant view possible of Monferrato, its landscapes and its cultural and food and wine expressions. That's how this one was conceived extra large programming which tries to summarize the areas in which we express ourselves perfectly: wine, territory, food and culture".
