Türkiye, third term for Erdogan

The outgoing prime minister obtains an absolute majority in politics. The first objective: to reform the constitution. But his party, the AKP, will have to compromise with the opposition. Among the priorities, entry into Europe.

Türkiye, third term for Erdogan

He wants to rewrite the constitution together with the opposition parties: so stated the Turkish prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in his speech to the nation after his victory in the legislative elections on Sunday. Erdogan is about to take office for his third consecutive term.

His party, Akp (Justice and Development Party), won the absolute majority of seats in parliament, reaching just over half of the votes, a better result than in the last general election (2007).

Its main rival, the Republican People's Party, narrowly narrowed to 26 percent of the votes, boosting its popularity. And the AKP has not received the huge amount of support its leaders expected on the eve. For the major constitutional reform that Erdogan is aiming for, it will therefore be necessary to negotiate with the opposition. And it is not said that it will be an easy path.
