A maxi pardon to make room for the coup plotters in Turkish prisons. This was announced by Justice Minister Beki Bozdag: there will be around 38.000 prisoners to whom prison doors will be opened before they have served their sentences. Those guilty of murder, terrorism and threats to state security are excluded from the provision.
On the other hand, around 35 people were arrested after the failed coup of July 15, although more than 11 of them have been released. In any case, the huge influx of new prisoners would have made conditions in the country's prisons more difficult.
