Türkiye: Russian ambassador killed

Russian ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov was killed by a policeman during a photo exhibition in Ankara. The bomber was later killed in a blitz by the Turkish police.

"We die in Aleppo, you die here," the man allegedly said before shooting. The identity of the attacker was disclosed: it would be a graduate of the police academy named Mert Altintas, 22 years old.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin after the killing. “We condemn this cowardly terrorist attack. Ambassador Karlov was an outstanding diplomat who worked through difficult times in Turkey and earned the statewide esteem for his personal and professional skills. We will not allow this attack to darken the friendship between Turkey and Russia,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry wrote in a statement.

The Russia Today agency also released the statements of Russian President Vladimir Putin according to which it would be a "provocation" aimed at undermining relations between the two countries and "the peace process in Syria promoted by Russia, Turkey, the Iran and other countries".
