TTIP, race for confidential documents

The controversial TTIP arouses the interest of Italian parliamentarians. Starting today, lawmakers, senators and government officials can view confidential documents relating to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) in the reading room established at the Ministry of Economic Development.

Given the great demand for permits to access the reading room, the Mise announces its willingness to extend the consultation hours compared to the current one and the available workstations. It also points out that, for the first time, confidential documents relating to an international trade agreement can be consulted before the conclusion of the negotiations.

In recent days, in consideration of the commitment made by the European Commission to ensure maximum transparency and dissemination of positions in the context of the negotiations underway between the European Union and the United States and the role assumed by the Ministry of Economic Development as national leader in training, Minister Carlo Calenda signed the Directive which defines the method of access to the Reading Room with organizational provisions borrowed from supranational experiences and in use in the other countries concerned.

The reading room, located at the ministerial headquarters in Via Veneto 33 in Rome, will be open from Monday to Thursday. At the moment there are two shifts in the morning and two in the afternoon (from 10 to 11 and from 11.15 to 12.15. In the afternoon from 14 to 15 and from 15.15 to 16.15).

Those who access are required to respect the safety rules and not to bring cell phones, smartphones or other devices capable of reproducing or recording images or words into the reading room.
