Trump from Macron: openness on the climate?

Big day in Paris. The French president, returning from the trilateral agreement with Italy and Germany on migrants in Trieste, met again with Chancellor Angela Merkel, but above all today was the great day of the visit of the American president Donald Trump and his wife Melania, received with great pomp at the on the eve of the French national holiday, July 14, and on the day (the 13th, today) of the entry of the United States into the First World War, a conflict that claimed 10 million victims. Tonight, for the occasion, the presidential couples dine on the Eiffel Tower, with a personalized menu and the most famous French monument closed until Friday morning for safety.

Trump went to France in the worst possible political conditions, overwhelmed by the Russiagate scandal, for which his son Donald Jr. is now also accused. The meeting with Macron serves the US president to break his isolation, especially after the G- 20 of Taormina had reaffirmed the independent position above all on the delicate issue of climate change. "With Donald Trump there is a convergence of views on various issues, including the fight against terrorism", Macron said in the joint press conference: "On Iraq and Syria, we agree on building a road map for the postwar".

Shortly before, meeting Angela Merkel, Macron had also reiterated that “there are no differences of views between Paris and Berlin on how to deal with Trump. We agree on free trade and against protectionism, and also on the climate and on how to treat the American president”. It is precisely the question of the climate that remains the most delicate, after "America first" repeatedly proclaimed by Trump and as many times rejected by the French president more than by others. Macron, who reiterated France's willingness to "continue on the Paris agreements, while respecting President Trump's decision", received a half opening from his American counterpart: "Tonight's dinner is a very special occasion, something could happen with regard to the Paris agreements: if it were to happen it would be wonderful, otherwise it will be the same".
