Terna, electricity consumption up 1,4% in November, -2,8% over 11 months. Boom in renewables (+43%)

According to Terna data, the growth in green energy production was driven by renewables which covered 41% of national demand. Production from thermal sources is decreasing (-21,8%), in particular coal (-65%)

Terna, electricity consumption up 1,4% in November, -2,8% over 11 months. Boom in renewables (+43%)

The electrical demand a November 2023. According to what was found by Terna, the company that manages the national transmission network, last month electricity consumption in Italy showed a positive trend, with growth of 1,4% compared to the same period of 2022. This increase, although partial compared to the negative November 2021 (-6,2%), was achieved with the same amount of working days (21) and an average monthly temperature similar to that of the previous November (-0,1°C). In adjusted terms, growth is +1,3%. Production from renewables recorded strong growth (+43% compared to November 2022), driven by the increase in hydroelectric sources (+ 86,6%), wind (+ 51,9%) and PV (+28,1%). Instead, the thermal production, particularly that from carbon, suffered a significant decline (-65%).

Electricity consumption rises in November, but industry declines

THEImcei index, which examines the industrial consumption of approximately 1.000 energy companies, recorded a negative change of 1% compared to the same period of the previous year. While companies connected to the high voltage electricity grid showed an increase of 0,7%, those in medium voltage suffered a decrease of -9,1%. Several industries, including transportation, paper, cement, lime and gypsum, showed positive changes, while other sectors, such as ceramics and glass, non-ferrous metals, food, mechanics and chemicals, recorded declines.

At a cyclical level, electricity demand, corrected by calendar and temperature effects, decreased by -0,8% compared to October 2023. The Imcei index showed a positive cyclical variation of +0,9%, maintaining the index on stationary levels thanks to the alternation of positive and negative variations.

In the first 11 months of 2023, the cumulative demand for electricity in Italy it decreased by 2,8% compared to the same period in 2022, with a decrease of -4,3% in the Imcei Index. At a territorial level, the trend change in November 2023 was positive in all regions: +1,4% per month North part, +0,9% al Centro and +1,9% al South and in islands.

The boom in renewables

La national production satisfied 82,1% of Italian electricity demand in November 2023. Production from renewables contributed significantly, covering 40,9% of electricity demand. The overall production from renewables was divided as follows: 40,4% hydroelectric, 14,9% photovoltaic, 28,7% wind, 11,7% biomass and 4,3% geothermal.

Renewable sources produced a total of 10,4 billion kwh in November, showing significant growth compared to 29% in November 2022. Considering all renewable sources, in the first 11 months of 2023, the increase in capacity in Italy was 4.938 mw, 85% higher than the same period in 2022.

Il import-export balance recorded a positive trend change (+7,9%) in November 2023, due to a decrease in exports (-21,5%) and a growth in imports (+5,7%).
