Terna and Digital Magics, first digital Call for Innovation

The invitation addressed to startups and SMEs focuses on the search for solutions to enhance and improve the IoT monitoring network that Terna is installing on various assets of the electricity system.

Terna and Digital Magics, first digital Call for Innovation

Terna, with the support of Digital Magics, launches the Call for Innovation I4G – Innovation For the Grid, for the first time in digital mode, aimed at innovative startups and SMEs that offer solutions capable of contributing to the digitization and increased resilience of the national electricity transmission grid.

"Given the emergency situation that the country is going through - explains the note -, it is important that companies rethink and reformulate their models with the aim of developing ideas, innovative projects and new forms of interaction and comparison through the use of digital tools: based on these considerations, I4G will be Terna's first Call For Innovation that will take place in a totally digital way".

This new Call focuses on the search for solutions to enhance and improve the IoT monitoring network which Terna is installing on various assets of the high voltage national electricity system and in particular is aimed at identifying advanced analytics algorithms and developing specialized sensors for power lines capable of integrating into its own monitoring network, enhancing and improving it .

The technological development plan that Terna is launching envisages, in fact, a new strategy for the use of the electricity infrastructure as an integrated environmental monitoring system that makes use of innovative digital tools placed on the pylons, fiber optic networks and the support of IoT technologies. This "alternative" use of the network, focused on new services for the territory and the community, has an intrinsic economic and environmental sustainability because it is based on the use of a single infrastructure for different purposes, thus reducing land consumption.

The application of innovative land monitoring technologies placed on network infrastructures it also promotes social sustainability because it allows local administrations and innovative companies to provide services in an interconnected system. The sensors positioned on the pylons, in fact, make it possible to collect monitoring data from the power lines in real time, which are then processed through a central platform.

Of all the projects submitted by 3 June 2020 on the site, up to 10 finalists will be selected who will have the opportunity to participate in the virtual Innovation Day on 30 June 2020, a day dedicated to the presentation of their innovative solutions. The application must be sent by June 3 at this link.
