Treno Verde 2019: the compass sustainability of FS ever greener

The FS Italiane Group is aware of the central role of mobility for responsible growth and intends to contribute to improving the quality of life and the territories it crosses by developing integrated and efficient transport infrastructure and methods.

On the occasion of Treno Verde 2019, FS Italiane presented the initiatives for sustainable mobility involving all the companies of the Group.

Sustainable transport for a better quality of life

The collective and integrated transport and mobility system is a central element for the development of territories and for improving the quality of life of the people who live there, but it is also a source of numerous environmental impacts, such as gas emissions greenhouse in the atmosphere. This is because the current mobility system is heavily biased towards private transport. To restore a balance it is necessary to increase the share of journeys with high environmental performance, such as rail transport, collective road transport and world sharing (car, scooter, bike).

Rail transport is the backbone of sustainable mobility

Rail transport is the backbone of the intermodal connection of people and goods. The success factors of the sector, safety and respect for the environment, are levers for consolidating and maintaining a leadership position.

Connectivity, social and territorial inclusion, growth in the labor market and in investments, safety and environmental protection are elements on which the railway sector can contribute significantly in the short and long term, thanks to its ability to combine sustainability and innovation.

Efficiency of industrial processes and fleet renewal

The high environmental performance of the new vehicles is the result of increasingly structured procurement processes that envisage rigorous requirements, relating, for example, to propulsion systems, design, energy recovery and the use of light materials.

The Frecciarossa 1000, in addition to being the first high-speed train to have obtained environmental impact certification, is built with materials that are nearly 100% recyclable. On the regional transport front, the new Trenitalia Pop and Rock regional trains have been designed to achieve outstanding energy performance, allowing for a 30% reduction in specific energy consumption compared to previous trains. These performances have recently been recognized to the FS Italiane Group by the financial market with the subscription of the first green bond issued by a railway operator for the purchase of new trains. Rock and Pop are part of the broader plan to relaunch the FS Italiane Group for regional transport. Plan which, with a total economic investment of around 6 billion euros and over 600 new trains, will guarantee, starting this year, the renewal of 80% of the entire fleet.

In collective road transport, the renewal of the bus fleet of Busitalia, the road transport company of the FS Italiane Group, continues with the purchase of Euro 6 motorized vehicles equipped with technologies capable of guaranteeing low energy consumption and increasing load capacity , obtaining a substantial reduction in particulate emissions and nitrogen oxides, compared to those of the previous generation, and a significant reduction in CO2 emissions.

In the design and construction of infrastructural works, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and Italferr, to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, have launched various initiatives aimed at a rational use of the resources used, the reuse of materials from excavations and their transport by rail.

Integrated transport services for passengers

For a general improvement of the mobility system in sustainable terms, the FS Italiane Group has also undertaken other initiatives. In addition to strengthening regional transport and high-speed services, the focus is on FRECCIALink connections, Trenitalia's integrated Frecce+bus service, as well as partnerships with car sharing services, such as Enjoy, and bike sharing in various cities (Bicincittà in Turin and Padua; Clear Channel in Milan and Verona) which make it possible to reduce travel with private motor vehicles.

Mercitalia Pole

In the freight and logistics sector, the strategy pursued is to maximize the benefits of intermodal transport through the Mercitalia hub, which has the task of relaunching the freight business of the FS Italiane Group, developing integrated solutions that make it possible to enhance the value of the railway method. Mercitalia Fast was launched in 2018, the first high-speed rail transport service in the world dedicated to goods, which will relieve the main Italian motorway artery (Autostrada A1) by around 9 trucks every year, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 80%. carbon in the atmosphere compared to road transport.

A new user experience

Digitalisation developments envisage an overall rethinking of the points of contact between the FS Italiane Group and people, starting with digital channels. For example, the Trenitalia app, increasingly complete and easy to use, and nugo, the FS Italiane Group app, launched in 2018, which represents the digital interface for integrated mobility. nugo, downloadable from the digital stores for Android and iOS, allows you to buy all the tickets for the chosen itinerary in just a few steps, promotes integrated door-to-door collective mobility, simplifies travel planning and responds to people's needs, proposing means of transport public, collective and shared throughout Italy: trains, subways, buses, ferries, car and bike sharing, taxis, as well as booking car parking in the railway station car parks.

Renewable sources for the production of clean energy

All the companies in the FS Italiane group are also involved in the development and promotion of renewable sources, both by inserting explicit requests in energy supply tenders and by activating proprietary photovoltaic plants. Rail transport, in particular, has a strong relationship with renewable energy: the railway network in Italy, almost 80% electrified, allows you to benefit immediately and directly from the share of renewables that make up the energy production mix electricity and which stands at around 35% of the total.
