Train hits truck and derails: 2 dead and dozens injured

A serious accident occurred on Wednesday at 23 pm on the Turin-Ivrea railway line. At the height of the municipality of Caluso, in the hamlet of Arè, a regional train ran over a truck that was stationary on the tracks after having broken through the barriers of a level crossing. The collision caused the derailment of the locomotive and two wagons. The toll is two dead, including the train driver, and 20 injured, including the conductor, in very serious condition.

Firefighters, carabinieri and 118 intervened on the spot, which set up a field hospital.

According to Rfi technicians, the train left at 22.30 pm from the Turin Porta Nuova station. The lorry, an exceptional transport with a Lithuanian license plate that was carrying some containers to a nearby company, "after having broken through the barriers of a regularly functioning level crossing, was stopped on the railway site". The driver would have applied the emergency brake without being able to avoid the impact.

“Regional train 10027 consisted of five cars and a locomotive – writes Rfi – Following the collision, the three lead cars derailed”. A light pole was knocked down, high voltage cables severed. A roadman's house also touched.

Wedged between the plates, the wounded were extracted from the wagons one by one. The most serious were then transported by air ambulance to the Cto hospital in Turin, where one died shortly after arrival. The others, however, were accompanied by ambulance to the hospitals of Chiavasso, Ciriè, Ivrea and San Giovanni Bosco in Turin. An investigation will be opened into the incident.
