Train derails near Milan: dead and injured

A train of the Trenord railways derailed between Pioltello and Segrate, at the gates of Milan. The convoy had left from Cremona and headed for Milan Porta Garibaldi. The fire brigade is at work at the scene of the accident. The provisional balance of what happened is three dead and five seriously injured, a hundred lightly wounded. The operations to extract the wounded who were trapped in the plates have ended.

Un structural failure of about 20 centimeters of track, about two kilometers further back from the site of the derailment of the Trenord regional train, was ascertained by the technicians of Rete Ferroviaria Italia. This is learned from sources of Rfi itself. Through subsequent investigations it will be necessary to establish whether the failure of the track was the cause or effect of the train derailment.

The technicians ruled out any malfunctioning of the Pioltello station switches. On the contrary, it turned out that the network security systems worked: the sensors positioned on the points detected the anomalous passage of some carriages of the train and placed all the signaling systems at "obstructed street", effectively blocking circulation in the area.

There were three cars of the 10452 Cremona – Treviglio – Milano Porta Garibaldi regional train that left the tracks. The train - according to an initial reconstruction by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, which manages the infrastructure - traveled about two kilometers with some wheels off the rails before one of the three cars hit an electric traction pole and crumpled. At that point the train broke down.

The Milan prosecutor's office has opened an investigation with the hypothesis of the crime of a culpable railway disaster about the accident. Meanwhile, the shares of Ferrovie Nord Milano, listed on the Stock Exchange, lost 8% at the opening to 0,73 euros immediately after the news of the accident, then recovered during the morning.
