Trenitalia: by 2017 Rome-Milan in 2h20

“By the end of the year it will be possible to go from Rome to Milan in 2 hours and 20 minutes with Frecciarossa 1000″. This was announced by the managing director of FS Renato Mazzoncini, on the sidelines of a conference on the railway sector, thus confirming what were the expectations, namely that to see Trenitalia's latest generation electric trains speeding along at 350 km/h, one would have probably wait until the end of 2017, or spring 2018 at the latest.

Mazzoncini specified that "the last Frecciarossa 1000s will be delivered by April. FS is in excellent health and we are ready to compete throughout Europe". The 350 km/h will be achievable on most of the Turin-Milan-Bologna-Florence section and from Rome to Naples while the Rome-Florence direct line, conceived in the 60s for a maximum speed of 250 km/h, will most likely be modified to allow speeds slightly higher than the current ones and only in some stretches.
