Trenitalia entrusts Alstom with 150 new electric regional trains

Trenitalia (FS Italiane Group) has entrusted Alstom with the framework agreement for the construction of a further 150 new electric trains for regional transport following a European tender procedure, awarded with the criterion of the most economically advantageous offer. This was announced in a note by the railway group which aims, with this new program, to improve the offer on regional trains both because the average age of the fleet is reduced and because the new trains make it possible to improve the quality and safety of the journey, be it tourism or work.

“The total economic amount is approximately 910 million euros. Investment made possible by the long-term Service Contracts signed by Trenitalia with the individual Regions”, specifies the FS press release.

These are medium-capacity single-deck trains that will be designed and built in the Italian plants of Savigliano, Sesto San Giovanni and Bologna, where the Jazz and Pop trains are already produced. New positive employment effects are expected from the contract as well as improvements from an environmental point of view, taking into account that they will have electric, diesel and battery traction. They will also be equipped with Wifi and 97% recyclable, with a reduction of approximately 30% in emissions compared to the trains they replace.

The Framework Agreement signed with the Regions, concludes the note, provides for a guaranteed minimum of 38 trains and confirms " Trenitalia's commitment to ensure increasing levels of quality for all regional transport travellers".
