Tremonti: "I'm not resigning"

Giulio Tremonti excludes the resignation and assures that he has "only a very serious and responsible maneuver in his pocket". These are the words of the Economy Minister at the entrance to Palazzo Grazioli, where a majority meeting is underway. The maneuver will be “the subject of a very serious and responsible debate – added Tremonti – and it will be in the interest of Italy and the Italians”. But the leader of the Lega Umberto Bossi continues to keep the tension high in the majority, confirming that "the government is at risk". Instead, it was the Minister of Economic Development, Paolo Romani, who threw water on the fire, reiterating in the morning that there will be no increase in VAT in the tax reform.

Luca Cordero di Montezemolo also entered the debate, defining the ballet we are witnessing in these hours between the different souls of the Government in relation to public accounts as "simply crazy and irresponsible". According to the former president of Confindustria, "we need rigor in accounting and courage in directing the few resources towards growth, starting with liberalization and competition totally ignored by the Executive to the benefit of small and large monopolies and the aspirations neo-statistics of a part of the ministers of this liberal government. We have said it and we repeat it: maximum support for the austerity line of the Minister of the Economy, there is no alternative and there is no time for breaks or resignations, requested or sought after. The space for political games and for personal power matches has run out, we are on the Piave line, the commitments on the deficit must be maintained quickly and without hesitation". Meanwhile, the Court of Auditors has sounded an alarm: the reduction in spending is at the limits of sustainability, it must be contained with selective, non-linear cuts.
