Treedom, a hundred thousand trees for the earth

“A hundred thousand trees for the earth!”. This is the appeal-target of the campaign launched by Treedom, in collaboration with La Repubblica delle Idee, to celebrate World Environment Day. The initiative will live its final phase in Florence from 5 to 9 June 2013, during the largest Italian event for the environment, and will also see the participation of the mayor of the Tuscan city, Matteo Renzi.

The initiatives will revolve around a large green stand set up in the city centre. From here, awareness-raising, information and dissemination activities on environmental issues will take place, both through the distribution of information material and through screens that will transmit educational messages on environmental issues. A conference and daily meetings on the theme of the green economy and sustainable development are also scheduled during the days of the event. In this setting Treedom will offer a great showcase to sponsors, who will be able to communicate their commitment to the environment to thousands of people.

Furthermore, to give a voice to the trees, the real protagonists of this campaign, Treedom will create an art installation in collaboration with the students of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Florence. The idea is to install signs on 1.000 trees located in green areas and passing through the city to raise awareness, through the use of texts and images, of public opinion on the issue of climate change and illegal deforestation.

Mayor Renzi will attend the symbolic planting of 6 trees in a Florentine school on 314 June. These plants were donated by La Repubblica delle Idee to the city of Florence as a gesture to raise awareness of environmental issues. Founded in 2010 by young students and professionals passionate about social media and the green economy, Treedom helps people, companies and event organizers offset their CO2 emissions by promoting reforestation projects in the southern hemisphere. The methodology devised by Treedom offers maximum transparency.

The company has in fact developed an innovative system thanks to which each planted tree is geo-referenced, photographed and always visible on the Treedom website (or on the company's website if desired) thanks to Google maps. The reforestation projects are carried out personally by local farmers and cooperatives and also include the planting of fruit trees, useful for supporting the food self-sufficiency of the communities and encouraging the development of local micro-enterprises.

By adopting a tree, an individual or a company can thus reduce their CO2 emissions and, at the same time, contribute to economic and social development by participating in projects in Cameroon, Senegal, Malawi, Argentina and Haiti.
